Village or city, whenever Europe comes up in conversation two names come first — and one of them is Spain. Someone’s brother is there, a boy from someone’s neighbourhood went last year, and you are sure to meet someone who heard “the papers are being processed” and handed an agent money in advance.
The problem is not Spain. The problem is that information about Spain reaches us from only two places: either from an agent, whose profit lies not in your knowledge but in your ignorance, or from some WhatsApp group where a three-year-old piece of news is circulating as today’s headline.
So let us sit down calmly and look at each route one by one. What are all the legal doors into Spain, which door opens for whom, and where do people stumble the most.
Work visa — but you are not the one who applies
This is the first thing that surprises most people. The application for a Spanish work visa is not made by you. It is made by the employer sitting in Spain — that is, the company or owner who wants to give you a job. They apply to the immigration office in their province for permission to employ you by name. If it is approved, you then go to the Spanish embassy in your city and get the visa.
Understand this one point and half the frauds explain themselves. When an agent says “give me money and we will get you a Spanish work visa”, ask him only one question: which company is giving me the job, and can I speak to them myself? If the answer is vague, end the conversation there.
There are some kinds of work in Spain where people genuinely cannot be found — truck driving, construction, welding, agriculture, hotels and kitchen work. Permission is relatively easier to obtain in these sectors. The government publishes a list of such occupations every three months. If your skill is on that list, your case is stronger. And if you have no skill at all, the honest truth is that learning a skill should be the first step, and the visa application the second.

Study visa — the strongest route, and the least used
It is strange that the safest route is the one fewest people take. Perhaps because it needs patience and an agent makes less commission on it.
Spain’s student visa is better today than it has ever been. You are allowed to work up to thirty hours a week alongside your studies — that is, you can cover your own costs. And after completing your studies there is a legal conversion into a work permit. You are legal from the first day, you stay legal to the last day, and your years of stay count towards permanent residence later on.
What is needed? Admission at a recognised institution, proof of funds for living costs, health insurance and a clean record. The cost is not as high as people imagine — and it is often less than the sum handed to an agent in the name of a “work visa”.
Seasonal work — and a plain word about it
Every year Spain calls in thousands of workers for the harvest. Strawberries, olives, oranges. This is true. But this programme runs mostly with countries that have formal government agreements with Spain, and Pakistan is currently not among them.
We are writing this because there are people selling a “Spanish seasonal visa”, and they are selling something that is in practice not open to your passport. Yes, for those already living legally in Europe, seasonal work is a real opportunity.
Through family
If your husband, wife, parents or children are living legally in Spain, they can call you over. The condition is that the person calling you has been living there legally for at least a year, that their income is above the set limit and that the housing is adequate for the family.
This route is straightforward but delicate on paper — attestation of the marriage certificate, the spelling of names, proof of income. We have a separate detailed article on this one subject.
For those who work online
If you work online for a foreign company — software, design, marketing, accounting — then Spain’s digital nomad visa was made for you. It looks at your degree or experience, a set monthly income, and a relationship of some standing with the company.
Many young people among us are freelancing and have no idea that there is a completely open, completely legal door to Europe available to them. If your income is close to that limit, do look at this option before going to an agent.
Your own business
Permission is also granted on the basis of your own business plan. For this you have to show a workable plan, capital and relevant experience. The route is not easy, but for those who have both a skill and some capital, it exists.
Asylum — and honesty about it
For a person whose life is genuinely in danger in their own country, who faces persecution on religious or political grounds, asylum is their right. This is not a back door; it is a recognised principle of international law.
But it is equally plain that poverty and unemployment are not grounds for asylum, and a false story made up by an agent falls apart in the interview. A rejected case narrows your own routes later on. We have written a full article on this subject; read it and then decide.
And those who are already in Spain
This is the particular thing about Spain that few countries in Europe offer. If a person is living in Spain without papers, the law provides a proper route for them — Arraigo. After two continuous years in Spain, and depending on the circumstances, an application for a residence permit can be made under different categories.
This is not a lottery, it is a process: collecting dated documents, keeping your record clean, and applying when the time is complete. The very first and most important step is registering with the town hall — Empadronamiento. So which route is for you?
If you have been to college or university and your age is on your side — look at the study visa. If you earn online — the digital nomad visa is your route. If you are skilled, a driver, a welder, a mason, a cook — the work visa, but with a genuine employer. If your family is there — family reunion. And if you are already in Spain — get your Empadronamiento done today and start the two-year count.
One last point, and it is the most important. On all of these routes the official fee is no more than a few hundred euros. When somebody asks you for fifteen or twenty lakh rupees, he is not taking money for the visa — he is taking money for your ignorance.
